A lot of people are now seriously considering building their own coaching business. The reasons why are pretty obvious; coaching other people is one way to make fat paychecks especially if the information you're selling is something that is currently in-demand. This job will allow you to work at your own pace and will give you the freedom to control your working hours.
However, before you even start conceptualizing your first coaching program, I suggest that you carefully assess your skills first. It's important that you do not sink your teeth into this endeavor unless you're 100% sure that you have what it takes to become an effective coach. Here's what you need to do:
First and the most important thing is to ensure that you're really an expert in your niche. I say it's important because there are just too many people out there who are just self-proclaimed experts. You need to have proofs of your authority in your niche otherwise, there's no way that you can get your prospects to trust you. Do you have relevant educational background, experience, and training? Do you have the needed certifications? Have you attended relevant seminars? Do people in your niche go to you when they have questions or when they have related problems?
Skill set. Just like in any other endeavor, coaching other people would require specific skill set. If you plan to send email series, of course, you'll need to have amazing writing skills. You must be able to explain things in a very easy to understand manner especially if you're giving how-to guides. You'll also need great presentation and great communication skills if you plan to offer face-to-face and group coaching programs. Great problem-solving and analytical skills are also a must. As for personal traits, it's crucial that you have a truck load of patience.
Sometimes, you'll need to repeat certain steps until your client finally get the message you're trying to get across.
Practice makes perfect. Don't let your first sessions be your "first burnt pancakes". Remember, you would want your clients to come back and you want them to recommend your programs to other people. So, strive to get it right the first time. Before you presentations, make sure that you practice in front of objective third parties who can tell you the things that you need to improve. This is one way of showing your customers that you really value them and their business.
Increase your knowledge and improve your skills. You need to continuously improve yourself on a personal level. You see, you're going up against a lot of people and that will make it harder for to you to attract more customers. But if you strive to be on top of your game and if you strive to be known as the best, people will flock your doorstep. Increase your knowledge by going back to school, by attending seminars, by doing experiments, and by getting first-hand experience.
